The Aston UCU branch is continuing to work on your behalf in all areas. In addition to the steady stream of case work where we represent you in grievance and disciplinary procedurs, we are currently involved in ensuring jobs are fairly graded so that they receive the right salary, addressing management bullying of employees on fixed term contracts, and protecting people against excessive workloads. All around the country, the UCU is similarly struggling to maintain jobs and conditions, with industrial action taking place in Kings College and Lambeth; see http://www.ucu.org.uk/inthenews_4jul2014 for more information and to add your support by signing the petitions.
It is more important than ever to be a member of the UCU and to take an active part, as a recent article in The Guardian points out: http://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/jul/01/underpaid-academics-need-stronger-unions. An area of current concern is more action on sustainable development, both within the union and the sector. To this end, the national UCU is trying to ensure that all branches have at least one member who is nominated to the position of Environment Representative. If you are interested in taking up this position, then please get in touch with a member of the Aston UCU Committee (see http://www.ucu.aston.ac.uk/key-contacts).
