As you are aware, UCU have called strike action for the 25th and 26th of May as part of a national pay dispute. This is not the time to stand back and hide: our pay has reduced by 14.5% in real terms since 2009 and the pensions restructuring has reduced our take home pay even further.
These are the reasons why the membership heavily voted for industrial action. As we pointed out before the ballot deadline, it is your democractic duty to vote and your democratic duty to honour the outcome of that vote, irrespective of which choice you actually made. Failing to support the strike weakens the union both nationally and locally and we expect every one of you, no matter what position in the university you may have, to support the strike.
You should not come into Aston on either the 25th or 26th of May or undertake any work at home, which includes answering emails. If you are asked in advance, you are under no obligation to inform the University that you are taking action. At this stage, we do not want to make our own lives or that of our students more difficult than necessary. If there are meetings or other duties you have already organised for either of those days, then, if you want to, you can give people advance notice. There is no point alienating people by not turning up to a meeting you have arranged because you are on strike. We would like to keep people's good will if we can, but we should explain that there is certain to be inconvenience in the end if there is no resolution.
We will be in touch shortly with further information about ways to demonstrate on the day. In the meantime, tell your colleagues why we are going on strike, persuade them to support you, persuade them to join the union if they are not already in it, and let the students know how they will be affected ... and why.
Your union is working hard on your behalf and its strength comes from your collective support. Don't let it down by breaking the strike.
