National Executive Committee election

Don't forget to read the manifestos of the three candidates for a vacancy on the NEC and vote. It is important that your views are heard both locally and nationally, so make your vote count.

Important developments on the USS pension scheme

You will know that the USS pension scheme has been under negotiation for some time now and the UCU has been working hard to maintain benefits in difficult circumstances. A national meeting has been called for September 18th and the UCC would like branches to feed views into it. A briefing document is attached to this news item and we would be very grateful for your responses by Monday 14th September so that we can collate them in time. An email has been sent out to all members and you can reply to that with your comments.

Branch News

The Aston UCU branch is continuing to work on your behalf in all areas. In addition to the steady stream of case work where we represent you in grievance and disciplinary procedurs, we are currently involved in ensuring jobs are fairly graded so that they receive the right salary, addressing management bullying of employees on fixed term contracts, and protecting people against excessive workloads.

Upcoming pay ballot and frequently asked questions

The national UCU officers have been fielding questions about the ballot. We thought it might be helpful to share the answers with you. Please do use your vote because it is vital the union is clear about its mandate. The marking boycott has been postponed from 28 April until 6 May when it will be reimplemented if the vote is to reject the current pay offer. You will be expected to follow the democratic decision of the membership so make sure you have your say in that.

1. I have to give my personal details when I vote. Is the ballot really secret?

Letter from Sally Hunt

Dear colleague,

The next phase of our campaign of industrial action resumes this week. UCU has joined our colleagues from Unison, Unite and EIS in calling a full day strike for this Thursday, 6 February.

A further two hour strike has been called for 9am-11am on Monday 10th February. Please support the strikes as we continue our campaign for fair pay in higher education.
